Error: "Attempting to load a 64-bit application, however this CPU is not compatible with 64-bit mode.'

5.Feb.2010 | by Gusac | Filed in: Windows

Some of you might be facing this problem while loading an iso or vhd and booting the virtual machine. The error comes up as:

'File: \Window\system32\boot\winload.exe
Status: 0xc000035a
Info: Attempting to load a 64-bit application, however this CPU is not
compatible with 64-bit mode.'

The reason behind this is that neither Virtual Server nor Virtual PC (VPC) support 64-bit guest operating system. That is, even if your host is 64-bit and you install a 64-bit version of Virtual server for VPC, you would not be able to run x64 bit gues operating system.

Same has been documented in the following Microsoft Virtual Server FAQ page : Virtual Server 2005 Frequently Asked Questions

URL: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserversystem/virtualserver/evaluation/virtualizationfaq.mspx

It says:

Q. Does Virtual Server 2005 support 64-bit processors?

A.

Virtual Server 2005 R2 runs on both 32-bit and 64-bit (x64) host operating systems. It supports both AMD64 and Intel IA-32e/EM64T (x64) processors. Note that Virtual Server 2005 R2 does not support Itanium (IA-64) processors. Earlier versions of Virtual Server run on x64-based hardware provided it is running a 32-bit version of a supported host operating system.

Note that Virtual Server 2005 R2 requires that guest operating systems be 32-bit.
